Fortunately for Arc Acres,\u00a0Sun Dynasty Farm and Savage & Fils,\u00a0there\u2019s\u00a0a growing\u00a0desire\u00a0among Canadian consumers for local and organic food for the nutritional value it provides.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

For Shelley Lucas, a local Ottawa shopper who lives in\u00a0Barrhaven, the Ottawa\u00a0Farmers\u2019\u00a0Market at Landsdowne provides what she wants.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Even though local vendors\u00a0have to\u00a0sell at a higher price point than the grocery\u00a0store,\u00a0Lucas feels that the cost is worth the better product.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

She regularly buys grass-fed beef from Payne for\u00a0the\u00a0higher quality of meat.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u201cThe\u00a0colour\u00a0is what\u00a0kind of threw\u00a0me off in the first place. Grocery store meat tends to be very pink,\u201d\u00a0said Lucas.\u00a0\u201c(Payne)’s\u00a0was\u00a0almost a\u00a0burgundy\u00a0colour. And there was a little bit of a different taste. I felt like I was getting more\u00a0healing aspects.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

She also wants to support local producers and vendors.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u201cI think it’s important that we support our communities before we’re out supporting these big corporations,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>

\u201cAnd I’d highly recommend to everyone that if you’re looking to change some things in your life, I think it’s important that we go directly to the farmers and pay them, versus going to the grocery stores that really don’t care.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Many Canadians are also looking to shop for local Canadian products due to the\u00a0<\/span>ongoing trade skirmish<\/span><\/a>\u00a0with the United States.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u201cI had to wrap my mind around the idea that if we’re shopping for convenience, then you’re not always getting mindful products,\u201d said Lucas.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Erin Perry, the\u00a0operations\u00a0manager of Ottawa Farmers\u2019 Market, believes that the direct producer-to-consumer model that the market provides is beneficial in multiple ways.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

One of those is the way in which farmers markets encourage seasonal eating.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u201cEating seasonally will teach you two things in one,\u201d she said.\u00a0\u201cIt’ll\u00a0teach you to look forward to each season for what it gives you. It also teaches you that things taste best in season. Major difference.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

She says people love the farmers\u2019 market for the community aspect.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u201cIt’s\u00a0a fun weekend activity.\u00a0You’re\u00a0going to\u00a0see something\u00a0you’ve\u00a0probably never\u00a0seen before,\u00a0and\u00a0you’re\u00a0going to\u00a0eat something\u00a0that’s\u00a0really delicious,\u201d said Perry.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
