But underneath the helmets, the&nbsp;goggles and the big red jackets&nbsp;is a compassionate team who dedicate themselves to ensuring&nbsp;the safety of&nbsp;skiers&nbsp;on the hills.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a group of 90, a majority of them are volunteers who donate their time on the weekend to help ensure safety on the hill.&nbsp;From tenured patrollers to excited volunteers, these are some of their stories:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>Geoff Skeggs, Patrol Leader<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A lynchpin of the team, Skeggs has decades of experience in ski patrolling.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An avid skier, Skeggs decided to learn first aid after becoming a father, later deciding to join the Canadian Ski Patrol (CSP).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Skeggs has patrolled Fortune&nbsp;since 2005. In 2019,&nbsp;he became&nbsp;Patrol Leader, right before the COVID-19 pandemic.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe pandemic with masking, restrictions, and curfews was a huge challenge,\u201d he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With quarantine measures in place, many patrollers left, and visitors stayed home.&nbsp;&nbsp;However, since then,&nbsp;Skeggs&nbsp;said the team has been rebuilt, and skiers and snowboarders have returned.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Despite the challenges, I find it very rewarding. I have&nbsp;a great team&nbsp;and we make it fun,\u201d he said.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen people get older\u202f-\u202fpast their\u202fschool\u202fyears\u202f-\u202fthey\u202fmainly come\u202fto ski but\u202fdon\u2019t\u202fhave friends who want to ski\u202fwith\u202fthem. When you come out to ski patrol,\u202fyou always have someone to ski with,\u201d Skeggs&nbsp;said.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Skeggs admits patrolling can be thankless.&nbsp;It&#8217;s&nbsp;often unpaid,&nbsp;cold&nbsp;and&nbsp;sometimes&nbsp;stressful. But&nbsp;to him,&nbsp;the&nbsp;patrolling&nbsp;community&nbsp;and the ability to help people make everything worth it.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Patrol leader Geoff Skeggs explaining how the patrol is organized on Saturday, January 31, 2026.\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/B-cdvslaEEc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>Pierre&nbsp;Pierre&nbsp;Blais, Assistant Patrol Lead<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The longest serving member of the team,&nbsp;Blais&nbsp;has been at Fortune for 42 years.&nbsp;He is also the Vice-President of Communications for&nbsp;CSP&nbsp;\u2014 Gatineau division.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Growing up in Quebec, he&nbsp;says he&nbsp;skied regularly&nbsp;at Mont-Sainte-Anne.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After&nbsp;Blais&nbsp;moved to Ottawa in 1982,&nbsp;a coworker suggested that he join a ski patrol,&nbsp;given his love for the sport and extensive knowledge in first aid&nbsp;through his lifeguarding experience.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When he saw how much his love for patrolling grew, Blais became Camp Fortune\u2019s assistant instructor the following year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy interest was in skiing for sure, but having this experience exposed me to medical knowledge and to mostly first aid,\u201d he said.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Blais explaining describing a situation where a man sprained his ankle at the top of the hill.\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8q9vD-gcYOQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The medical side of patrolling became a specialty for Blais.&nbsp;He\u2019s&nbsp;since built a wealth of knowledge on patient treatment on the hill.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am not a paramedic, but a lot of people think I am, just on the basis of the knowledge I have,\u201d Blais said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>Lian Stanley,&nbsp;Volunteer&nbsp;Ski Patroller<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A conflict studies and human rights student at the University of Ottawa, Stanley is a busy woman&nbsp;and a passionate mental health advocate.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Outside of Fortune, Stanley is a&nbsp;volunteer at Tanner Steffler Foundation\u2019s youth Advisory Council, vice president of communications with&nbsp;the&nbsp;UOttawa&nbsp;chapter of the Canadian Courage Project&nbsp;and co-president of&nbsp;Jack.org\u2019s&nbsp;uOttawa chapter.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As an alpine racer in the past, Stanley said she wanted&nbsp;to find something&nbsp;more&nbsp;community-oriented.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last year, she began training as a ski patroller.&nbsp;After 80 hours of online and in-person&nbsp;instruction,&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On January 31, Stanley was welcomed by the team for her first shift.&nbsp;&nbsp;In the patrol community, it&#8217;s a tradition and an honour to receive your red jacket. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Lian Stanley receiving her ski patrol jacket\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/U_el4RVYjaY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Geoffrey Skeggs presents Lian&nbsp;Stanley with her patrol jacket for the first time after&nbsp;receiving&nbsp;her certification.
