{"id":59,"date":"2026-02-06T19:46:16","date_gmt":"2026-02-06T19:46:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stories.j-proj.com\/thelocalscoresheet\/?p=59"},"modified":"2026-03-01T06:32:55","modified_gmt":"2026-03-01T06:32:55","slug":"story-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stories.j-proj.com\/thelocalscoresheet\/2026\/02\/06\/story-1\/","title":{"rendered":"A quarter century, 300 wins and a coach who still loves the game"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A look at the legacy and impact of Algonquin Wolves women&#8217;s volleyball coach Everton Senior <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/stories.j-proj.com\/thelocalscoresheet\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/02\/Coach-Senior-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"Everton Senior at the Jack Doyle Athletics and Recreation Centre.\nBy Mickey Banks\" class=\"wp-image-270\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stories.j-proj.com\/thelocalscoresheet\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/02\/Coach-Senior-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/stories.j-proj.com\/thelocalscoresheet\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/02\/Coach-Senior-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/stories.j-proj.com\/thelocalscoresheet\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/02\/Coach-Senior-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/stories.j-proj.com\/thelocalscoresheet\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/02\/Coach-Senior-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/stories.j-proj.com\/thelocalscoresheet\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/02\/Coach-Senior.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Everton Senior at the Jack Doyle Athletics and Recreation Centre. <\/em><br><em>Photo credit: Mickey Banks<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On Jan. 31, Everton Senior, head coach of the Algonquin Wolves women\u2019s volleyball team, recorded his 300-career win, defeating the Loyalist Lancers 3-2 in Belleville.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sabrina Berger, who\u2019s in her first year playing for the Wolves, said she didn\u2019t realize Senior had reached this milestone during the game and found out after on Instagram.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen I actually understood it was his 300 win, that&#8217;s definitely something to be proud of, that&#8217;s insane,\u201d Berger said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Grace Pate, who\u2019s played for the Wolves for three years, said the team has been sure to remind him of the win.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have the poster that they made of him on our whiteboard in our locker room,\u201d Pate said. \u201cIt&#8217;s pretty funny to tease him about it, because he doesn&#8217;t like attention like that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Wolves went on to finish third in the East Division with a record of 11-5, bringing Senior\u2019s tally to an impressive 301 wins and 126 losses in 25 seasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Senior\u2019s coaching journey began after playing volleyball for four years at the college.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt just seemed like a natural transition for me,\u201d Senior said. \u201cI love sports so much and when my playing career was done, I wanted to continue to be on in some capacity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Senior said he was a tougher coach in the beginning but time and experience has lightened his style.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;m not a big yeller,\u201d Senior said. \u201cI try to hold the girls accountable, but I try not to embarrass anybody, and if I need to speak to somebody about something, I&#8217;ll do it away from the team. I guess maybe they would say I&#8217;m a player&#8217;s coach.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Courtney McNaughton has been an assistant coach with the Wolves for almost a decade. She said working with Senior has taught her many things, with patience being at the top of the list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe come from different coaching backgrounds but I really enjoy working next to him,\u201d McNaughton said. \u201cHe makes me want to be better for the girls, be better for the team as a whole.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Senior is a passionate and fun presence on the court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf you ever watch one of our games, you&#8217;ll see that he gets pretty into giving a ball back when we have three balls on the court,\u201d McNaughton said. \u201cHe gets pretty into it with his dance moves slash kicking styles. So that rounds him out as a whole, very competitive in a game, but very fun, easygoing and laid-back.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After a quarter of a century, Senior\u2019s drive to continue with the Wolves comes from the players.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey&#8217;re young, they&#8217;re bubbly, they&#8217;re infectious,\u201d Senior said. \u201cI look forward to coming to practice, I look forward to seeing the girls and when that fire burns out, then I&#8217;ll know it&#8217;s time for me to step back.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Senior, the most rewarding thing about coaching are the bonds that he\u2019s formed over the years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen all is said and done, I&#8217;m still in contact with ex players, I&#8217;m getting invited to weddings,\u201d Senior said. \u201cI&#8217;m seeing these girls turn into young mothers, and they reach out to me and tell me how much I&#8217;ve been an influence in their lives.
